Uneasy dogs and how one can improve them

A dog will likely be dogs and because it is something he inherited from his parents.

You ought to take extra care when introducing a edgy dog to new people or new conditions because they are much more guarded than other dogs you’ll have dealt with. It is essential that being a puppy, your dog is correctly socialised and sometimes exposed to situations where they get positive experiences without negative ones.

You should not overwhelm or scare the dog. From time to time the tell tale signs usually are not noticeable as they can be very subtle, and may even go overlooked. The puppy may look away, lick his lips, yawn a lot or back away and conceal himself. When you notice this behaviour, try to distract your dog by making him do something he enjoys, but gently encourage him to maneuver away from the situation. This may also help the dog associate the situation with something more pleasant. In time, if the symptoms go unnoticed, the animal will begin to cower and tuck his tail in between his legs and perhaps start panting.

Never force your pet to confront these situations thinking he might get accustomed to it! If he is pushed, your pet may growl and become aggressive.

When this happens, you must not ever punish the dog because of this behaviour; this may only make things worse and can make your dog frightened of you and even snap at you. Try to look out for the early signs of nervousness to try and stop the problem.

Sometimes you are able to isolate what it can be that makes him worried, it could be loud noises, traffic or strangers. This can be because of a previous encounter that frightened the dog, or a completely new and strange situation for him.

The way to tackle this problem would be to very carefully introduce the animal to these situations, and always linked with something your dog likes to do, like eat treats or play together with his favourite toy or game. Always be patient with the dog, remember animals can sense your frustration and mood, so you could possibly make things worse in the event you don’t stay calm. When you notice this jumpy behaviour, very calmly approach your puppy and move him from whatever is making him panicky, it will show the animal that you intend to safeguard him, but will give him more self-confidence in what you wish from him in the future.

Try avoiding a lot of situations that you already know make the dog nervous, and gently take them on, one at a time until your dog becomes more confident. Keeping your dog occupied with commands or play will take his mind off what’s worrying him and make him and also you more relaxed in these situations. Dont forget to praise your pet when he copes with a situation that sometimes makes him ways to, and in time, he will gradually improve and the issue will then can no longer exist. Be patient this can take weeks or even months to accomplish, but at the end of your journey you will both feel the satisfaction of a job well done!
